The links and documents below should be helpful to anyone working on restoration of an historic building. Please email us if you have any questions or would like more information.

BENEFITS OF PRESERVATION

Safety

There are specific requirements for anyone working on pre-1978 housing or facilities that have children to address lead concerns. This does not require total abatement but may only need proper containment and cleaning as areas are disturbed. Anyone performing such work for hire must provide information in advance about the presence of lead or asbestos and take appropriate steps to mitigate. They must provide information about the process to the owner and residents before starting work.  See current info at NC Department of Health and Human Services.

Asbestos is a concern and again there are regulations on who can be do certain any activities. Forsyth County has local review of those activities and can be reached here.

National Park Service Preservation Resources

The Preservation Briefs and Tech Notes are the authoritative source for dealing with historic buildings. If you are looking for information about almost any historic building material or issue, check their full list. Here are a selected few.
